Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) announced yesterday she will help Republicans steal a Supreme Court seat by voting for President Trump’s nominee, Neil Gorsuch.
The court has gone without a ninth justice for more than a full year because Senate Republicans refused to take a vote on Merrick Garland, who President Obama nominated in March 2016.
Republicans decided that Supreme Court justices only get appointed when a Republican is president, and Heitkamp is playing along.
“This vote does not diminish how disturbed I am by what Republicans did to Judge Garland,” she said in a statement. “But I was taught that two wrongs don’t make a right. There isn’t a perfect judge. Regardless of which party is in the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court should be above politics.”
As the only top Democrat in North Dakota, Heitkamp is a tough spot politically, so it’s stupid to imagine that she wouldn’t throw Republican voters a bone from time to time. But this issue is clear-cut: it’s simply not the GOP’s turn to nominate.
